„Once upon a time“ it has been discovered that by eliminating the output transformer i tube amplifier design, the single most sound-currupting component is removed. It is amazing how the absence of the output transformer vastly improves the sound quality of the entire audio system, regardless of its class.
The concept of having the output transformer removed from a tube amplifier was introduced by Mr.Julius Futterman in the mid 1950's and inspite the over-all primitive technology of that time, measured by today's standards, Futterman's design was the first to demonstrate the following:
·the improvement in reproduction of low-level resolutions
·elimination of magnetic saturation distortion inherent in output transformers
·greater feedback correction allowed, without causing the instability problem of the amplifier
Over the period of several decades, the few firm conclusions on tube amplifiers amoungst the audiophiles could be drawn-out:
·tube amplifiers generally sound more neutral and musical than other types
·all-triode tube amplifiers sound better than other tube amplifier designs
·all-triode OTL („output transformerless“) amplifiers sound the best of all !
